Solidworks Design & Simulation of Pneumatic Power Steering System
Most power steering systems rely on hydraulic fluid to assist steering effort — fluid that can leak, degrade over time, and needs periodic maintenance and top-ups.
This is a design and simulation project: a pneumatic power steering system that uses compressed air pressure, instead of hydraulic fluid, to assist steering effort. The full assembly — steering linkage, pneumatic actuator, and control valve — is modeled in SolidWorks, with motion and force simulation used to validate the assist ratio and check for mechanical interference before any physical build.
How It Works
- A compressed air source (small compressor and tank) supplies a pneumatic actuator — a rotary or linear air cylinder — linked to the steering linkage.
- A directional control valve, actuated by the steering input direction, routes air to one side of the actuator to assist turning that way while venting the other side.
- Because the working fluid is air rather than hydraulic oil, there's no fluid to leak or degrade — just standard pneumatic maintenance such as filters and occasional seal checks.
- SolidWorks is used to model the actuator, linkage geometry, and valve body, and to run a motion/force simulation validating the assist ratio and identifying interference or stress concerns before fabrication.

Note on This Project
This is a CAD design and simulation project centered on SolidWorks — the core deliverable is the modeled assembly and motion/force study, not embedded code. A working prototype extension would add an electronically actuated directional valve, which is a natural next step for students who want to build a physical demonstration.
