GSM Based Home Appliance Control System

GSM Based Home Appliance Control System

GSM based home appliance control system

Imagine turning ON your home air conditioner 10 minutes before you arrive, or switching OFF forgotten appliances from your office. This project makes remote home control possible using GSM technology. The SIM900A GSM module acts as the communication interface, receiving SMS commands sent from the user's mobile phone. The Arduino processes these commands, identifies the target appliance and desired action (ON/OFF), and controls the appropriate relay channel.

Arduino

GSM Home Appliance Control – Arduino Uno R3

Arduino is an open source electronic prototyping platform.Arduino board designs use a variety of microprocessors and controllers. The boards are equipped with sets of digital and analog input/output (I/O) pins that may be interfaced to various expansion boards ('shields') or breadboards (for prototyping) and other circuits. The boards feature serial communications interfaces, including Universal Serial Bus (USB) on some models, which are also used for loading programs. The microcontrollers can be programmed using the C and C++ programming languages, using a standard API which is also known as the Arduino language, inspired by the Processing language and used with a modified version of the Processing IDE.

GSM Home Appliance Control – SIM900A Module

The SIM900A is a quad-band GSM/GPRS module that works on frequencies 850/900/1800/1900 MHz. It can send/receive SMS messages, make voice calls, and establish GPRS connections. Communication with Arduino is via serial UART using AT commands. The module requires a SIM card with sufficient balance and valid network connectivity. In this project, it continuously monitors for incoming SMS commands, parses them, and instructs the Arduino to toggle the appropriate relay channel for appliance control.
