This project examines the design and operational principles of a CNC turning center, focusing on the coordinate system fundamentals—Cartesian and polar—that govern tool-path generation. The machine control unit interprets G-code instructions to orchestrate servo-driven axis motion, spindle speed modulation, and automatic tool changes. Key advantages over conventional lathe operation include consistent surface finish across production runs, ability to machine complex contours impossible with manual methods, and reduced cycle times through optimized feed rates. The discussion extends to economic considerations including capital investment trade-offs, operator skill requirements, and maintenance regimes for ball screws, linear guides, and spindle bearings.
